Ex-hitman John Wick comes out of retirement to track down the gangsters that took everything from him.
John Wick is a notorious assassin who was formerly employed by the Tarasov Mob. He left his profession to spend time with his beloved wife, Helen Wick, who eventually died from an unknown ailment.
Viggo Tarasov, his boss, agreed to let John quit on the condition that he accomplished an insurmountable task, which was to eliminate all of Tarasov’s adversaries in a single evening. John completed the task and retired, living peacefully with his wife for a little over five years.
However, after his wife’s demise, John was forced out of retirement when Iosef Tarasov, Viggo’s son, killed his dog, Daisy, which Helen had gifted him after her death, and stole his car during a home invasion.
John completed his mission by killing Iosef and, eventually, Viggo before retrieving his car from Viggo’s brother, Abram Tarasov.
Unfortunately, John’s “impossible task” compelled him to make a blood vow to Santino D’Antonio, a Camorra mob heir, who made it impossible for him to retire again by forcing him to murder his sister, Gianna, and allowing him to take over their family’s legacy.
After John killed Gianna in Rome, he found himself in conflict with many hired assassins of Santino, who wanted to eliminate loose ends.
After several confrontations, John managed to return to New York and opted to murder Santino in the Continental’s lounge, where no assassinations were allowed.
This action prompted the Continental’s manager, Winston, to revoke John’s membership in the High Table, making him excommunicado.
He gave John one hour to flee for his life because of their friendship. John, with the help of his old allies in the Ruska Roma and Sofia, met with the Elder, the head of the Table, who agreed to forgive his sins and nullify his excommunicado status if he killed Winston.
Although he initially agreed to the task, he was eventually convinced by Winston to live as the man his wife loved rather than as the Boogeyman.
John was betrayed by Winston, who shot him to regain his position among the Table after killing dozens of High Table assassins.
John survived the fall and was brought to the Bowery King’s lair, where he agreed to team up with him to bring down the High Table.
After killing the Elder, Winston convinced John to take a more intelligent approach and use the High Table’s own rules against them.
John struck a deal with his sister Katia to be reinstated into the Ruska Roma and challenged the Marquis Vincent de Gramont to a duel under the High Table’s rules, in which he would earn his permanent freedom from the High Table.
Despite being mortally wounded by his old friend Caine, John killed Vincent and won the duel and his freedom, eventually dying in peace.
Winston and the Bowery King buried John next to his wife, with the epitaph “Loving Husband,” which John had previously requested of Winston in the event of his death.
